25 April, Sarajevo

On the occasion of the celebration of Europe Day 2024 and the 20th anniversary of the biggest enlargement of the European Union, we organised a Gala Concert at the National Theatre, Sarajevo, during which Beethoven’s 9th Symphony was performed.
This truly special performance captivated audiences both in the theatre as well as on Susan Sontag Square. The Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Theatre Opera Choir, Rocio Faus (soprano from Spain), Magdalena Pluta (mezzo-soprano from Poland), Amir Saračević (tenor from BiH), Daniel Čapkovič (baritone from Slovakia) and the Camerata Slovenica mixed choir all performed. The conductor of the concert, Jan Caeyers, a Belgian musicologist and conductor, is one of the greatest experts on Beethoven in Europe.
This unique event was realised in cooperation with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium, within the framework of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the European Union and the embassies of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia and Spain.
