International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide on March 8 every year. In different parts of the world the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political, and social achievements.
For this year’s International Women’s Day the European Parliament highlights the issue of women’s economic empowerment in a series of events focusing particularly on the following areas:
- Women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics
- Freedom from violence
- Gender-sensitive policymaking
- Work-life balance and the gender pay gap
- The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
